Does Apple iPhone Firmware update automatically?

I've got an unlocked iPhone (1.0.2), if I connect it to iTunes, will it automatically update the firmware?

Obviously, I wanna check this out before I connect it to iTunes, as I don't wanna lose my unlocked iPhone!

It asks in a dialog. You can choose to say no and I think turn off update checks.

I said no twice before installing it since I was busy and wanted to wait.

No, it will download the software, but you have to request it to update the phone.

No, Apple doesn't force you to update your phone. If you have a software unlock in place, I wouldn't recommend that you update to 1.1.1 yet.

No it will not update unless you ask it to update to the latest version.
