I had to replace the charger on my 2008 macbook pro a few years back, and they were fully willing to sell me one of the "L" shaped ones for it (the ones that fray really easily and suck).

I upgraded to a 2009 MBP that I inherited from a family member last year, and the charger has now given out.

I tried to call an Apple store to see if they had replacements in stock, and I automatically got transfered to a call center, where the representative looked into the issue and informed me that they no longer sold chargers for the 2009 MBP and that it would need to be a "T" charger and that an "L" charger wouldnt work.

Is this true? If so, why was I sold an "L" charger as a replacement for my 2008 MBP charger?

Ah. I stopped by the apple store shortly before it closed so I couldnt speak with anyone and picked up a magsafe 2. I guess I'll return it tomorrow and get a magsafe 1 if they have them.

Why does the apple website make a distinction for various models between the T and L shape?

Is it just what they ship with?

@Ravich Apple updated the MagSafe 1 adapter to the L-style for both aesthetics and for durability. While there are some durability complaints with the L-Style adapters, they generally do not fray as much as the older T-Style at the connector. Both offer identical functionality.
