Reader Mode is one of my favorite features of Safari. I use it all the time to de-clutter, reduce distractions and improve readability.

But I'm not finding such an option in News.app. Am I missing something obvious? ...This is one case where I'd happily be stupid and oblivious.

You're not missing anything. The news app is made by Apple to basically be slightly fancier reader version, although some news outlets do a poor job of formatting it. For example, this news article is the simplified version of this one.

What Apple News for the Mac needs is a "trash this god-awful, worst app ever released by Apple, hot mess and have Apple engineers who have a clue start over" button.

Co-signed. Apple talked up Catalyst and yet they're content for this turd of an app to be most Mac user's first impression of it. I can't think of anything nice to say about it, even the text rendering is a blurry mess.
