Not to thread Jack but how does this AT&T next program work if you intend on keeping phone? If you keep making payments which total the cost of the phone and want to keep it are you eligible for another handset upgrade without trading in the one you paid off?

Correct. Once you pay the device off you stop making payments for that device and your eligible to get a new device.

That is false. There are no activation fees for AT&T Next. When you sign up for Next it replaces your original contract and makes the phone out of contract and when he pays off the device he is free to cancel the line with no ETF.

Yes the new phone would now be out of contract and he could cancel the line but he will still be following his previous contract terms (confirmed by multiple ATT managers).

This goes with Sprint and Verizon as well..

These carriers know about the loop hole that OP is speaking about...

Not sure what loop hole you speak of but as long as the op knows that once he pays off the device he can cancel the line with no penalty.

Update: OP here.

So I call 611 speak with ATT again. Apparently you have to make 2 installments with ATT next before you can "pay it off in full". It's in their internal documents.

They have this noted on my records in case there is a problem.

I guess I will make 2 installments than pay off phone in full and than cancel the line. I took off the data plan and put a flip phone on it.

So going to be able to terminate the line with my September 2014 billing cycle and pay off device.

Not too bad considering I would have had to keep the line open till october 2015 with my original subsidized contract (purchased subsidized $199/299 iphone 5S in October 2013).

Saved me about $130 in fees ($10 a month to keep line on flip phone x 13 months) or ETF would have been around $200 plus ETF taxes (yes there are like 10-15% ETF BS taxes you have to pay)
