For example, the infamous Eduroam? iPhone, iPad and MacBook all support this, but gaming consoles and even Airport Express routers can't deal with it.

Even the 2nd and 3rd generations can do WPA2 Enterprise... but you do have to use a profile configuration and apply it to the Apple TV... the profile can carry multiple configuration instructions, one of which is the WIFI info

Hi! That is a good hint! But I can not make the Apple Configurator 2 to recognise the new 4th gen aTV. With 3rd Gen it has no problems, but the 4th remains hidden from iTunes, Apple Configurator and Xcode. What am I missing here? Under System Information, it becomes listed as USB device, just like the 3rd gen device.
So does it mean none of the aforementioned apps have yet been updated to recognise the USB ID of the 4th gen aTV??

Edit: it works! My Apple TV has held a solid connection for the last 6 hours! I had to add an extra certificate specific for my university and then push it to the ATV with the configurator.

That's really strange. My aTV has no problems connecting to my Mac with Apple Configurator 2 from the App Store. Have you tried all the basics, eg reboot, change cable, change port?
