I'm swapping my 6+ for a family member's 6 and he's concerned about losing his text messages (everything i have are in imessage)

Does backing up and restoring each respective iPhone save text messages? So I backup his phone in iTunes, wipe it, and then restore the 6+ with his backups.

Will all of his text messages make it back?

I'd test myself, but again, everything I have is in imessage

Thanks!!

Yes, everything is backed up. Texts, photos, app data, the arrangement of your apps..... A restored phone will be in exactly the same state as when it was backed up.

when i back up and restore , i use encryption, because it allows you to restore health data and the keychain ( the part of the iPhone that holds safari passwords and wifi passwords ) to a different iPhone. if you do not use encryption then only the iphone's keychain can be restored to that iPhone

its probably less important now that we have iCloud keychain
