FWIW, I've found that my blood oxygen reading very much changes depending on which watch band I'm using.

If I use my sport loop, I can almost never get a 100% reading. It tends to max out at 98% and generally reads at 95%.

If I use a nylon band with a buckle, I can regularly get 100% readings.

My readings were all over the place with pretty much every band I had owned until I got the solo loop. That band seem to hold my watch in the right place to give the readings every time.

If you get 100% regularly you should try to calm down. 100 normally is too high, it indicates you are hyperventilating.

Does the blood ox app need to be launched to check? Doesn't it continuously check? (Thinking of getting an AW6).

It does check automatically in the background, but not continuously. I think it tries to check a few times every hour, but if you aren't still the reading doesn't work. So it can often go hours without getting a reading.

Damn...this isn't helping the case in getting an AW over a Garmin.

But sometimes I wonder if I'm over-estimating the accuracy of any smart watches.

I’ve been tracking Blood Oxygen, Respiratory Rate, Heart Rate, etc. with sleep tracking on, since early November. I wear my AW S7 23/7, only taking it off to fast charge it, some time during the day. Periodically I export the heath data to Excel for more detailed graphs.

The granularity of the various heath data reported by my AW varies significantly. For example, since early November my AW has reported roughly…
Heart Rate — 300/day
Respiratory Rate — 55/day
Blood Oxygen — 12/day, including 2-3/day that I initiated.

Note: Respiratory Rate is only captured during Sleep Mode and Blood Oxygen is captured 24 hrs/day. But as others have posted, the Blood Oxygen measurement is finicky about movement, etc..

I would definitely treat any spo2 figure it throws at you as a curiosity. If you want anything close to accuracy you need a finger reader. Shining a light at your wrist just isn’t going to cut it.

Agreed. But I’m curious whether there’s a difference between a $15 and $100 pulse ox finger reader.

I doubt the technology is any different between the two.
