Forget the garbage other people are writing in this thread, changing the Hard Drive DOES NOT void your Warranty or Applecare.

If you call AppleCare, you'll get a different story. To the OP: It's up to you to decide if you want to believe someone in a forum, or AppleCare. There's no substitute for calling them yourself and getting the official answer, like I did.

Called today

My HDD died. I am currently living on an island in the South Pac and the closest apple store is 5000 miles away. I called and the first person on applecare told me they don't cover it. I then asked to speak to his supervisor. After a half hour on hold the person I spoke to said that changing the HDD DOES void the warranty, BUT only for the HDD. He said everything else would still be covered (except obviously anything I break while doing the repair). He said that they would NOT send me a replacement part, but that if I did change it out myself that the rest of the laptop would still be covered.

dude, writing your answer in bold doesn't make it more valid. it's 100% false. I went to the apple store recently to get my computer repaired and the dude told me that the warranty is void if i changed the hard drive. he let me walk out and cancelled the repair. ;)

The hard drive is user serviceable in the uMBP's but not the previous generation.

I just received an email from apple verifying that the hard drive IS user replaceable.
This is what it said:

"The hard drive on your computer, Macbook pro, 15-inch, Late 2008 does appear to be user installable."

Hope that clears it up.

I think the bottom line is, if you get it in writing from Apple, that the part is user-replaceable (like aomiles did) then your warranty is good.

For MBP's it voids the warranty, UNLESS you get an Apple authorized service person to do it for you.

For MBs it doesn't void the warranty at all if you DIY. (Apple even provides a DIY guide on its website).

That's a load of crap. Magnuson-Moss warranty act, read it.

A warranty cannot be voided due to a modification of the product being warrantied unless said modification can be proven to be the cause of the defect. Plain and simple.

This goes for cars too. You CAN change your own oil and still have a warranty.

He lied. Like I said in an earlier post: read the Magnuson-Moss warranty act.

(c) Waiver of standards
The performance of the duties under subsection (a) of this section shall not be required of the warrantor if he can show that the defect, malfunction, or failure of any warranted consumer product to conform with a written warranty, was caused by damage (not resulting from defect or malfunction) while in the possession of the consumer, or unreasonable use (including failure to provide reasonable and necessary maintenance).

I've replaced the HD in my late 2006 MBP, and sent it back to Apple twice in the past year with that new HD -- once for a new Superdrive, once for a new logic board. They sent it back with the upgraded drive in place, no questions asked, no issues at all.

I've never heard of them replacing the drive with one of the original size, that would be annoying.

Late 2008 is unibody. I think the main problem is with pre unibody versions, where you have to remove the top case. The unibody MBP and MB's make it easy, so you can replace it.

For what its worth I replaced my HD in a pre unibody macbook pro. Apple has seen it numerous times since then, nary a peep.

my early 2008 IS user replaceable:). Just did it this morning. Kinda daunting, just because one eff up, and could cost you a lot of money. But it is really easy, as long as you dont force anything and use common sense and refer to the ifixit guide. I probably could do it in under 40 minutes now that i have changed one out..

My MacBook Pro 2007 model just suffered a bad logic board or the graphics card went out causing no display on the lcd. I took the laptop to the apple store and the genus said they would replace the board with a brand new one. I had put in a 500GB 7200 RPM drive in it myself and wanted to be sure they swapped it back. The genius said normally they wont tell people this but he said put in the original harddrive back into the laptop then bring it back into the store for the replacement part. I guess they wont swap out the harddrive, at least he didn't void the applecare warranty.
