its my understanding that apple only charges tax for online orders to states which have apple stores already within that state. correct? so could i use my educational discount for my school in TN (which has an apple store in memphis) and ship my order to an address in KY (which has no apple store) and not be charged tax?

let me know if im wrong/misinformed in my thinking.

shipping does not matter. what matters is where it will be billed to. lets say i am living in VA(with apple store). but i have a computer shipped to DC(no apple store). because mybilling address is in VA they well charge me VA slaes tax.

It doesn't really matter if it there is a reatil presence or not, it has to with a company presence. Apple has a presence in I think all states escept maybe Alaska, so, if your state charges sales tax [some do not], and you order from Apple, you will pay tax. And you must order from Apple if you want the EDU discount. I know, I tried to find a way around it, can't. If anyone figures this one out, please let me know.
