Does Equipment Really Matter?

Not my write up, sharing it:
Here's an excellent article in Headphonesty that covers very well what many of us in this group have been trying to convey to many of you for years.

While you obsess over this UHD player vs that one, this speaker wire vs that speaker wire, this amp vs that amp, or this DAC vs that DAC, there is really only one thing in your system that you can reliably tell is different from another like it: Your speakers. Seriously.

There are two things that are critically important in your system: the speakers and the room itself. Those two things are significantly more important than everything else. Vastly, even. It's not even close. Get the best speakers you can afford (preferably with measurements that show they're good speakers), idealize the placement of the speakers, and work on the acoustics of the room. If you do all that, everything else will fall into place.

The AVR or processor doesn't matter that much. The amps don't matter that much. The speaker wires DEFINITELY don't matter. Get good speakers.

If after you have the speakers and room nailed down, you want to play around with AVRs or processors to try different room correction, or get an amp for lower distortion and more headroom, or you want jewelry to make the system look pretty, do that. But, get the speakers and the room right before you spend your precious funds on things that don't really matter much, if at all.

Now, before you comment to tell us all about how you tried two different speaker wires and could easily hear the difference, please read the article. Then, read it again. Years of testing says different.
