mine says there is an $18 fee, but i called and the lady said it would be waived. She also put a note on my account stating that they will call me next month to confirm there was no fee charged to the account. One thing you gotta say about ATT is that, even though their service is crap, their customer services is pretty great.

"A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 07/29/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit participating iPhone sales locations for pricing on this offer."

So what? $5 off the retail cost, plus the $18?

Common Apple, give AT&T the kick in the balls it needs, and offer the phone on all carriers.

Just tried to go through a mock sale of an iPhone 3GS on Apple's website and it appears that both of my lines are waived the $18 fee and eligible for the fully subsidized price.

I wonder if it'll stick when the pages are updated for the iPhone 4.

I also wonder if people going through the AT&T site will actually be hit with the $18 fee. Knowing AT&T, it wouldn't surprise me.

UPDATE: Just went to the AT&T site and the mention of $18 is gone. ;)

I have to agree. ATT, who I've had since the iPhone 2007 rollout, is miles ahead of the awful Sprint in terms of Customer Service. I have had really good experiences with ATT over the phone.

AT&T $18 upgrade fee - what is it?

What is this fee and why do I have it? I bought the iPhone 3G on launch day two years ago and so did my girlfriend. She doesn't have the upgrade fee but I do. I searched and found nothing concrete about how this fee is determined.

What gives -- anybody know more about this?

It is a fee that is charged to you AT&T bill for upgrading your phone. It is the same when you first started the service and you were each charged a $36 activation fee. It is the same fee - just cut in half for upgrades.

Mine was waived, but my husband's was not. My number is the primary, which I think has an affect on it.

Try searching in the titles of this forum for "FEE". This has been discussed several times.

With the banks or AT&T?

With AT&T.

Upgrading your phone as does starting a new service locks you into a commitment where they are guaranteed funds for X amount of years. I'm not going to pay a fee to extend my contract.

With bank fees it's pretty much "deal with it."

Profit. Basically ATT getting cash out of you for doing an upgrade/new service.

Actually there used to be two $18 fees. Not sure why they're getting waived up front this year.

But does anybody know how they determine who gets the $18 fee? Like I said, me and my gf got our iPhones the same day. We were both new customers to AT&T. We both have the same plan. So why did I get the fee while she got it waived?

I Called and got them waived. Supposedly it is waived if one of the lines standalone is more than 99 dollars. I just kept pressing the issue that I have been there for 3 years and my total bill is way higher than 100$ and pay on time every month. Eventually the CSR put me through to a manager and he put a override on my three lines to credit me back the 18$ on all lines when I activate the new iPhones. He said I would have to call back when my bill shows the 18$ and reference the date and the notation will be referenced to credit me back the upgrade fees. I hope that helps.

I just called and they refused to waive the fee for me. Spoke to the supervisor who refused as well, said there was nothing he could do.

My bill however is not over $100 but the supervisor mentioned that there were many attributes that could cause the upgrade fee to be waived but declined to go into details for me. Too bad.
