Does FCP X Duplicate Video Files?

Hi,

Can anyone confirm that Final Cut Pro X duplicates files when they're imported, rather than just using the original file in its original location?

I'm not currently on my iMac where the files are stored, so I can't check, but I'm wanting to move spare videos to an external drive, and I don't want to move a bunch of videos, just to find that they've then vanished from Final Cut.
