Data Breaks converting from HDV Pro Res

Hello

You guys must know ...

I capture HDV from tape on my PC for editing on the Mac in FCPX because my Mac does not have Firewire 400.

Then I convert it to Apple Pro Res 422 with MPEG Streamclip but I constantly get data breaks.

Why is this and what can I do about it?

How come you say no transcoding is needed? I cannot drop HDV onto an FCPX event.

Thanks

miniDV into FCP X

I gave up about a year ago on trying to import miniDV into FCP X. I record lots of continuous speachs and the firewire imports start to go out of sync after 15 mins or so. I'm not sure if Apple fixed that or not.

I would say it's worth the $29 to get the Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adapter. Works on everything but an ancient EyeTV 200 I have.

Seriously...The Thunderbolt FireWire adapter is the FIRST adapter I bought before walking out of the Apple store with my new rMBP, that and a bit later a gigabit ethernet adapter, I just keep them in my "rMBP goodies bag" if I need them on a job or something (since I carry my MacBook when I do photo and video). Also FCP X is probably the most versatile NLE in terms of just how many formats you can use in one timeline, you can mix anything and everything in any timeline without any issues, it makes every other NLE seam overcomplex by a mile once you understand it. Tape capture works but its not exactly a highlighted feature of FCP X in that its not going to pop up right away when Apple is promoting file based workflows...annoying but yeah. If your having sync issues make sure your settings are correct such as drop frame time code, etc. honestly its been a while since I've captured from tape but I don't recall any issues other than not using drop frame timecode.

I use iMovie HD (version 6?) for this exact task as it seems every version of iMovie after that, and FCPX has problems ingesting DV. I get no dropped frames and it is a very simple process that works.

My camcorder outputs FireWire which is converted to Thunderbolt via an Apple adapter, into a hackintosh computer I built with a thunderbolt motherboard. Works great!
