When giving away an Apple device, I know that Apple Care+, which is purchased as an add-on, has to be cancelled or transferred by jumping through a couple hoops, but does the standard Apple Care that comes with new iPhones (and most Apple products) also need to be manually transferred? Or does it automatically apply to the new owner? In other words, is the standard Apple Care tied only to the device serial number and the owner is irrelevant?
Thanks!

Edit-
Also, how does one verify that activation lock is turned off when buying a used device that has been reset to factory settings? Is the only way to try signing in with my account? So if I buy from a stranger, then I should sign into the device before they leave?

AppleCare is essentially just Apple’s branded warranty, and it stays with the device rather than being tied to the original owner.

Ok that's what I was thinking, thanks.
I added another question about activation lock to my post. If you happen to know the answer, I'd appreciate it!

No such thing as "free AppleCare." That doesn't match Apple's terminology. If you are selling the phone and say it has free AppleCare, you are likely to get someone upset about false advertising. Just say it includes the original manufacturer's limited warranty from the purchase date of whatever. AppleCare as a term is only used for AppleCare+ and AppleCare One.

Ah ok thanks for the correction

While the one time payment of AppleCare stays with the device, the monthly plan is tied to the original owner and don’t believe it can be transferred. There is also a way to transfer the one time purchase, link below.
