Does GPS work in Wifi mode Only on 4G iPads?

Does GPS work in wifi mode (assume disabled 4G) on a 4G iPad? Or does it just use Wifi to triangulate your position.
 
Assuming it's the same setup that the ipad 2 has, the 4g models will have a real gps chip in it that works independently of the data connection.
