Does Homepod (or AirPlay) time itself out?

I'm a deep sleeper and sometimes need a very loud alarm to wake me up. The alarm volume in my iPhone doesn't cut it. So I got the bright idea of routing my alarm sound (in my case, it's built right into the clock app I use, not some tune called out from iTunes) to my HomePod, which ought to be plenty loud to do the trick. Problem is, I have it all set up when I go to bed, but when I wake up the next morning the AirPlay linkage between my iPhone and my HomePod is broken and the sound only gets routed through the tinny little speakers of my phone.

This has happened to me enough times that I'm beginning to wonder if there's some undocumented feature or bug, involving either AirPlay or my HomePods themselves, whereby a link eventually times out if it is not being currently used to move data. Has anybody else had a similar experience? If so, can anybody figure out a way to defeat it so that when I wake up in the morning?
