Does iCloud Backup backup imported photos?

Just curious. According to the kb article, Apple says it only backs up photos in the Camera Roll, suggesting that imported photos (i.e. from a Camera Connection Kit), which are not in the Camera Roll, are not backed up.

I know synced photos do not backup as they already exist elsewhere.

But supposedly the iPad is pc-free, so does iCloud Backup backup the imported photos?

And if it does, isn't that kind of large? I would imaging that most people would want to import photos in a pc-free manner, but wouldn't that use up the free 5GB rather quickly? Like the 5GB isn't really enough for 'most users'.

All that means is you don't need a computer to get your photos from the camera onto the iPad. From my experience it doesn't back them up though. I've had large collections of images on there and the backups are still quick and small.

So you would still need a PC to keep your photos then, if it doesn't back them up? because what if you buy a new iPad and restore from iCloud backup?

That said, I transferred 1.7 GB of photos onto someone's iPad via the CCK, and the next iCloud backup is like 1.8 GB.... The size of the photos....that would suggest to me that they are backed up? So much conflicting info out there.

Photo transferred using the Camera Connection Kit are treated differently than those transferred from iTunes.

Direct observation sounds like the right answer. I did some searches and you're right... There's a lot of opinions out there.

Hmmm. Thanks for the help regardless.

I'm just curious to see if photos are backed up. I assume they would be, since what happens if you get a new iPad and you are using your old one PC-free? You would lose your photos.

    But will investigate further.

The entire Camera Roll is backed up. Photos imported using the CCK are put into the Camera Roll so those will be backed up. Photos synced via iTunes/iPhoto are not part of the camera roll and will not be backed up. Those will need to be resynced via iTunes. :apple:

Confused… apparently the iPhone uses the term "camera roll" but my iPad does not. When I import photos using the Camera Connection Kit they go into two folders "Last Import" and "All Imported". I have the same questions About iCloud backup but are the answers the same for both iPhone and iPad?

The camera connection kit only works on the iPad. Imported photos do go into the iPads "Camera Roll" but on the iPad it's simply labeled "Photos"
