Does iCloud update apps across devices?

I was under the assumption that iCloud would update apps across devices if you updated the app in just one device. I have automatic downloading turned on in the app store for my pad and iPhone, but the apps aren't automatically updating. Do I need to do something special with iTunes on my iMac? Or was I wrong in assuming apps automatically update when I update on one device? TIA.

As far as I know.....no. iCloud allows you to download NEW apps in one place, and have them downloaded on all other devices. But updating is still done per device/Mac.
