I'm in the minority that misses black/slate as an option. I remember when the gold option was still rumored that everyone thought the iPhone 5s would have two new colors (space grey and gold) along with silver and slate. But nooo.. 
discontinued slate and updated even the Mini 1 to Slate Grey.
BTW, I have an iPad Air 1, bought first week of release last year and an iPhone 6 bought just a month ago, both slate gray and both the same shade. I don't see a difference in mine like the one poster's picture of his four devices.
