Does iPhone support 3G?

Hey guys i am new at this forum , the reason i write is cause i am really amazed by the iPhone ... and i decided to buy it. I live in Slovakia so it would be better for me to have a 3G capable phone cause EDGE is not supported here. So i would like to ask if the old iPhone will be capable of supporting 3G only with a software update , or the software update would do nothing cause there also need to be some kind of receiver also mounted?

The 1st generation (current) iPhone you have will never be 3G as the hardware is totally different.
