I have Macbook Pro 15" 2008 (Penryn). I upgraded it to 256 SSD and 6 gb ram. Yes, it runs better, but only a bit. Stick to 6 gb ram - people got kernel panic with 8 gb ram (some motherboards in these models doesn't work with 8 gb).

None of the pre-unibody MBPs support 8 GB of RAM, the later models can only go up to 6 GB.

Yes, you're right. But it was about ram chip set up: it's better (but harder to buy) to put 2+4 GB than 4+4 GB. Result is the same - MB Pro see only 6 GB, but it can crash with 2x4 GB.

For around $400-500 you can find a used MacBook Air with 256GB RAM, which will outperform your pro in every category. I certainly would not invest $300 into a 2007 machine. However, if you can get the SSD and the RAM for very cheap (preferably used components), it might be a different story.

If I could find any computer with 256 GB of RAM I am sure it would outperform any MacBook for years to come! LOL. I know what you meant though. You were saying Ram when you were referring to the SSD. It is mid-2018 and the fastest MBP right now is only at 32 GB of RAM! The fastest Mac that I know of has 64 GB of RAM. I am sure it is possible to make a computer with 256 GB of RAM, but pretty expensive and hard to find! ;-)
