When did it become mandatory to upgrade to the newest iPhone? I’ve had people make a negative association because of my decision to use the iPhone SE over my iPhone X.

What I constantly hear is “omg that phone is so tiny I could never use something like that” or “that’s something I would get for my kids” and most recently “couldn’t afford the iPhone X huh?!” I thought phones were supposed to be for the persons own personal needs not as a trend or to show that you have money to blow? Don’t get me wrong I really like the X, but I just find this form factor so much more comfortable to use.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this?

Don’t ask others. It is only relevant to ask: “Does it matter to yourself what your friends think?”

I guess it’s more of a am I missing something question because I could really care less what phone someone decides to carry but there seem to be a lot of opinions on my choice to use this phone. And it’s crazy because it’s only those who also have an iPhone.

Depends on your own usage or workflow
Not likely you are missing anything of any real value though (animoji, selfie camera, etc.)
Personally, I prefer the size of the SE even though I have a X

There are A lot more pertinent things in life than to be concerned about someone else's opinion Over a smart phone. I can't recall a time ever someone has posted their opinion on my choice of a smart phone outside a tech forum. It's odd to begin with.

If I listened to someone else's opinion about my stuff I'd never own anything I wanted to own. Everything would be what everyone else thought I should own.

I could care less about what people think I should or should not have. I want what I want and there's no room for anything else.

You aren't missing anything.

Agreed, it is odd! It’s like I pull my phone out to snap a picture and here someone comes along with whatever they feel compelled to say in regards to my phone. All I can wonder is it really that serious?

No

Here's how it's generally gone with the people I hang out with. "Is that the new 'insert phone name', cool". Then everyone moves on and forgets about it.

This is how it should go! Funny thing is I’ve never had anyone comment on my iPhone X when I do use it but boy does my SE draw attention.

Get the phone you can afford and meets your needs and those that you are likely to have. It should not matter what others think of your purchases. As others have posted, if you are judged on your purchases, then its time to find a better class of friends.
Remember: Saving money is not a crime.

Do not let your friends rule what you want.

It is your money to do as you wish.

It is far from mandatory to buy the latest and greatest as many here have choose not to do so.

The SE is a nice phone, enjoy!

If you ask me, YOU have it right. Everyone else has it wrong. You found something that you like (that is way cheaper than the flagship iPhones, mind you) and you're content with it.

Likewise, my current phone is two years old. I'll probably get another year out of it.

And frankly I sort of envy you with the 4" screen -- one handed use on my current 5.7" phone isn't easy! :p

For the folks that feel compelled to always be upgrading, I say -- anyone that puts their identity in the price/newness of their iPhone needs to do some self evaluation.

I only encounter this sort of tech snobbery online on sites like this one and YouTube comments. In real life, most of my friends and coworkers live by the philosophy that there’s no point in replacing a phone as long as it’s still functional. I know far more people who are using an iPhone 6 or older than using a 7 or newer. I work with someone who just replaced his iPhone 4s a few months ago.

It sure how old you are, but this is, was, typical HS and early college behavior. If you have adult friends (over 20) that act like that, find new friends. People who are so wrapped up in material things that they belittle others aren’t worth your time. You do need to decide whether they are yanking your chain or being serious though.

I don't really pay much attention to what other people use for smartphones, but I did hold a neighbor's iPhone SE the other day and it was enough to make me reconsider my choices in phones. :p

I have never wanted an iPhone Plus, but I'm almost there in size with the iPhone X. I really wanted the dual cameras. Years ago I started with the 3G, so I've lived through the enlarging of the iPhone (and of smartphones in general). I have an iPad, so it's not like I use my iPhone to watch moves or play games on. I mostly use it for photography, texting, light web browsing, and occasionally maps. I guess my "why" for the X is because it's a fantastic photography tool. I also wear an Apple Watch, so I don't need to keep my iPhone too handy since I check texts, appointments, weather, etc. on the watch. Since my iPhone is often in my bag, rather than my pant pocket, I guess I'm okay with it being larger than necessary. However the iPhone X is barely small enough for me to operate with one hand... and even that requires a stretch. What I love about the SE is that it is a truly one-handed smartphone with no awkward "reachability" feature required.

I think you've got the right idea... why carry around something bigger and more expensive if the SE meets your needs?

I upgraded my wife’s 4s to my old 6 a couple of weeks ago when I upgraded to the X. Don’t really like the screen size of the 4s, but it sure fits nice in my hand and a model without bezels might it might not be so bad.

Apple relies upon the insecurities and group think potential in people to sell their products. The term “cult of Mac” wasn’t created from nothing

The only reason I still use my SE is because there isn’t an android equivalent in performance AND size imo. Pixel 2 comes close

I hate to say it, but there's a reason why people call iPhone users "sheep".
