Does mac mini output audio through mini display port? I have the last iteration of the mac mini (non unibody one). Does it output audio through the mini display port? I was told by an apple rep that all I need to do is buy a mini display port adapter->HDMI and I should be able to hook it up to a TV. Is he correct? Thanks!

You have a 2009 Mac Mini. I don't think those have audio out over mini-DisplayPort.

Does anyone know for sure? Is it a hardware thing? Maybe a software update will help?

If it can't then its a hardware limitation.

DisplayPort technology does support audio traffic as well as video. The 2009 models have some problem (I suspect EFI related) that doesn't push audio over the DP. My 2010 MBP pushes audio over DP, so I would hope the current version of the Mini does as well. Is this for a second monitor? If not, then I find it silly to convert DP to HDMI when there is an HDMI port already next to it. I do wish they had included a DP-HDMI or DP-DVI adapter instead of the useless (to me) HDMI-DVI.

Edit: Found this article Apple.com: Mini DisplayPort to HDMI explaining that the 2010 Mini supports up to 8 channel audio over the DP, so the 2011 had better do it.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. I already tried when I first got my 2009 Mini last summer.

Sorry, I mis-read the OP with the non-unibody part. The 2009 Mini does not support audio over DP. The best option is the DP to HDMI cable, and running audio out the 3.5mm jack on the back. You should check to make sure your display has an HDMI port that links to a pair of audio ports. My 3 year old Vizio has 4 HDMI, and the 4th port can pull audio from the composite 2 input while showing video from the HDMI cable. If your display doesn't support this for HDMI you'll want to find out if the DVI port does.

Of course if you're going into a receiver you shouldn't have any issue with HDMI to your display and audio to the receiver.
