Does Messages need to be open to receive?

If I quit out of Messages will I still be able to receive texts? I'm hoping it just works in the background as long as you are signed in and your'e not required to have the app open in the background like you would say Skype or Live Messenger.

Yes, I just tested it from my main account in iTunes to my @me.com account. I had messages closed on my Macbook and received the notification.

That's great to know then. It just operates like Calendar or Reminders then and just works away in the background and interrupts you if needed.
