Does Migration Assistant work both ways between Intel and ARM?

I'm helping someone who needs to send their Intel Mac (running Big Sur) in for repairs. In the meantime, they need another Mac, and I suggested an M1 Mac. Will they be able to use Migration Assistant to transfer from the Intel Mac to the M1 Mac, then when the repairs are done, use Migration Assistant to transfer from the M1 Mac to the Intel Mac?

Wouldn't it be safer just use TM to backup the Intel Mac, and mount the TM image on M1 Mac in case you need the data, and recover from that TM image when the Intel Mac is back from repairing?

Migration Assistant should work, but I personally want to start it over for M1 Macs.
