How about the issue that involves you having to piss away a hundred bucks on an adapter that came directly from Satan's perineum?

HAHA. still up Grue? not midnight yet i guess LOL, can always count on you for dry humour this time of the night.

Well, yeh, begs the questions. There's such a sh*t storm from MBP users using this adapter with flicker issues etc. just want to isolate if its just a MBP problem or if it affects the MPs as well.

I want to make sure I'm correctly informed before I purchase.

Its going to have to be either:

1. 1 x 4870 + current 2600XT
2. 2 x 3870's
3. 2 x 8800GTs

and 3870s have the noisy fan issue. the 8800s are not as good as the 3870s for Core Image. So I'm thinking the 4870, but not if the adapter is a waste of time.

I'm not keen on adapters either, nor having to throw more $$$ at the Apple money bin

Yeah, still up… actually on holiday for a week so I don't have any real reason to go to bed at a non-retarded hour.

In any case, it looks like the 8800GT is actually king of the hill in Core Image with the latest drivers, based on the Nehalem benchmarks @ BareFeats. it's possible that it's architecture specific, but I wouldn't count on it. I'll try and find a 4870 to hijack and run in my Cloverfield 8x3.0 and do some benchmarking in Motion to see if that's the case.

Nice. the rest of us will make the world turn while you're on hols :p:p

while you're doing it, know anyone with a spare MDP to DL DVI adapter and 30 ACD lying around for you to test this setup?

I don't trust the MiniDisplay Port to dual-link DVI adapter... I've heard all kinds of horror stories from blurring to flickering with all the other devices that use it... I'd like to hear from a Pro user to see if the same thing happens with the Mac Pro as well.

I noticed it went from shipping in 24hours to 7-10 days in the apple online store...

Exactly. Surely someone must have tried this set-up

* SIGH * I'm sick of aasking. So no body knows. *****in gr8. NOT

Well, my guess is nobody uses it around here, or are waiting for the price to drop. Like Cobalt said, the shipping time has skyrocketed - I would surmise that to the defect in the original adapter finally being found, and now Apple is having some rush-processing to get adapters that DO work.

My $.02. I could be wrong. It could also be a driver issue or some hardware issue on the MiniDisplayPort-out itself.

thanks for the comment. quite a few people have the new MPs in their hand now. and some of them have dual 30 ACDs. so all i'm asking is if any of them have tried the adapter to hook up their 30 ACD. is that too much to ask?

Well yeah because you need to find someone running two 30" displays who is going this route rather than a 4870 and GT120 or two GT120s over choosing the adapter and reads this forum and clicks this thread. Not a big group of people I'm guessing ;)

you make some valid observations  but its not impossible to find someone who may have the setup :D

Works fine so far

One 30" ACD has worked perfectly for a week now with the 4870 and the dual link adapter. Note that the initial bootup default display, at least in my case, was the MDP, not the DVI. Also, the adapter USB needed to be plugged in for power.

No occasional flicker? (like the monitor goes black for a split second)?

None at all; it has been completely transparent. Either my adapter doesn't have flaws that others do, or the numerous problems noted with the MBP are related to the computer or USB configuration. Waiting for an MBP to try this adapter on.

Excellent. Thanks for the confirmation. Could you post a pic of the connections/setup, esp the USB adpater. thanks :D

thanks for taking the time to take the photo :) looks like you have two displays connected. are they 2x ACD's?

No, the second is an HP LP2475w 24", which is only connected occasionally. The MacPro sometimes defaults to the displayport, so it is convenient to have the 30" ACD on the Dual Link adapter as the primary display.

yeh, looks like you got a non apple cable going into your DVI port. A non-proprietary display connected to your MacPro.. how could you :D:p

If you want to switch the ACD 24" between computers you have to manually switch the cable, and the cable isn't even long enough to reach my MacPro.
