Does MobileMe work as a sync with other email addresses?

I just got my wife a MacBook yesterday, and thats in addition to our iMac and her iPhone. I want to set up a way so that when she reads here email on one (or deletes it) it takes care of it on all three devices. From what I saw on Apples website, this is accomplished with @me.com address. Problem is that she doesn't want to change her email address. Currently we use earthlink.net. I was curious if the sync works with this (and possibly) other accounts (earthlink, gmail,etc...)

    Thanks,

Not really. Push is only intended for .me email addresses and nothing else.

FWIW, any email service that allows access via IMAP will accomplish the same thing.

GMAIL is an example of a free service that offers IMAP (so you'd be able to use it so that when she reads her email on one device (or deleted it), what she did will sync to the other devices).

Either way, it'd require her to change email addresses.

Both MobileMe and GMAIL have the ability to check other email accounts, so if someone sends her an email to her earthlink account, it could automatically be made to show up in her MobileMe or gmail account.

I wouldn't bother with MobileMe unless you want to sync calendars and contacts, use the iDisk, etc. If you're just wanting email, go Gmail. It's free and does a lot more than MobileMe's email does.

Get a Gmail account and set it up to send and receive all the Earthlink mail (use this help page). Set up your Mail program on all three devices with Gmail IMAP and you're good to go.

Also, if she does decide to switch email addresses, I just read about a new feature that Gmail just added that might make the whole process a little less painful.

Calendar syncing is actually a very important feature which is why we were considering mobileme. It sounds like I can have the mobileme check the earthlink account, so that may work.

I guess I should sign up for the 60 day trial and give it a shot.
