Can anyone tell me if mine supports dual layer burning?

It does.

Here are the details of the burner in my macbook pro.

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:

Firmware Revision: ZA0E
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

I'm trying to burn a dl +RW DVD and get an error message about the laser can't calibrate to the proper power level for the inserted media (if you need I'll try again for the exact same error). This is the first time I've tried DL media and of course the 1 year warranty ended 2 weeks ago and Apple support says "too bad you should have bought the extended warranty".

I do know the media is good as it burns fine on my wife's windows desktop.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mitch

Had the same problem with my old Mac Pro. You know, a simple Google search could fix your problem. ;)

Sort of related... can anybody recommend a car audio deck that plays audio DVDs? CDs are a lot more expensive in Canada now because they raised the CD levy.

What software do I need to burn DL?

Same problems here (MacBook Pro). I have tried with BASF EMTEC DVD +R 8.5GB blanks and with the Leopard disk utility, but my blanks always get ejected again (after listening to really weird ticking sounds from my DVD drive).

Do I need iDVD or some other special SW to burn DL DVDs?

Oh, and I checked: My drive is built for DL burning:

Odd, mine appears to be the same drive but does list DL support.

it appears i have a different firmware some some people on here, and my macbook pro does not seem to accept any DL disc.

This is the profile of my macbook. As to your earlier question as to why you can't burn +RW DL DVDs, if you look closely it only says "+R DL" discs, NOT +RW. Sorry :-(.
