Does my reservation mean I'll definitely get a phone?

I don't think there are any absolutes across hundreds of stores, but if you made a reservation and show up at your time there should be no problem. And, why wouldn't you expect the Apple store to, in effect, forfeit your reserve if you don't show or leave because "Not everyone can waste an hour+ in the apple store in release day..."? An airline will give your seat to a standby passenger if you don't show up.

airline is different, you are purchasing a seat to travel on X date. The apple product can exist on any day. So technically its not a reservation but a "right to purchase on Friday"

It's functionally the same. A reservation is a reservation regardless of product or purchase process. Why is this so hard for people to understand. Make reservation: show up: buy phone: done!

If you have a 5:30 pm reservation can you show up hours early and be served?

Probably not. I've shown up early for service appointments and they serve me on time. Can't see it being any different on the pandemonium that will be launch day.

But since your credit card is not charged at all before the reservation time, it does not feel like anything is actually being placed aside for you. If you couldn't make it that day (sick, last minute business trip etc) , there is no guarantee you will get anything. So technically you reserving the right to buy unit X of 10,000 on Friday the 25th Only.

Any proof otherwise?
Sure.
The subject of the reservation email you get is "Your iPhone is reserved."
In the body:
"What should I expect when I arrive at the store?
When you come in for your reservation, let a Specialist know you’re there to pick up your iPhone."
and
"What if I’m late for my reservation time?
If you’re late, or if you miss your scheduled time altogether, we may not be able to hold the model you reserved, and you may have to make another reservation."

So you are not just reserving the right to buy one if they happen to have one. They are holding the specific model you selected for you and assuming you show up on time you will be able to pick it up.

That's the way it's always worked.

so essentially, if you for some reason you can't make it to the store on the reservation day, you potentially get nothing as they turn around and sell your 'reserved' unit to someone else?

Not everyone can waste an hour+ in the apple store in release day...

Anyone experienced this with past releases?
What do you expect? Should they just hold a phone for you until you decide to show up? You are the one who schedules the appointment time, so pick a time when you know you can be there.

The subject of the email confirmation I got says "Your iPhone is reserved", then in the body "When you come in for your reservation, let a Specialist know you’re there to pick up your iPhone" and "If you’re late, or if you miss your scheduled time altogether, we may not be able to hold the model you reserved"

The whole idea is that you are reserving a phone not an appointment to buy a phone that may or may not be in stock.

Changed your tune now on reservations?

Yes I have. I was skeptical yesterday, for the most part because of misinformation from Apple reps, but now I'm convinced.
I was too, just because I felt like it's no good if you aren't charged yet but from what people are saying sounds pretty good to me. I wonder if all the launch day "reservations" are all booked now or can you still do it

No, launch day reservations got booked up pretty quick.

I'm thinking the in-store reservations will be first priority as they are the only ones with guaranteed time slots. This is probably why Apple switched to 2 weeks from pre-order to launch...they need to make sure they have the reservations filled. The rest will ship out as available.

Many of the iPhones are at the Apple Stores now. That is why you were able to reserve it! They sit there for two weeks until launch day. Apple Store had to do an inventory count to let people like you know if the iPhone is available for reservation.

So I just reserved mine and I plan on doing the iPhone upgrade plan. I didn't really see that in the options and the price listed for my reservation is the full $800 dollar price. Did I do something wrong or do I just go in at my reserved time and say I want the monthly payment plan for the upgrade program? Thanks in advance

I'd like to know this as well

Pretty much a reservation is a reservation. It doesn't matter if you reserved through the iPhone upgrade program link or from the pre-order link, they are the same. As long as you haven't paid for the phone yet, you will be able to choose how you want to pay at the time of pick up.

As for myself, I placed a reservation via the iPhone upgrade program link but I plan on purchasing it outright at the time of pick up. If you also look in the FAQ, it says

Can I change the iPhone Upgrade Program to a different purchase option?
You can also purchase your iPhone through carrier financing or at full price. Ask a Specialist in store for more information.

When I made my upgrade program reservation it said my model was "in stock" at my local store for pickup 9/25 so I agree they had phones already staged at the stores.

It has never been the case that new phones have been physically at Apple Stores two weeks prior to launch. In this instance "in stock" is the inventory of phones already pre-allotted to stores. I doubt very much that actual 6s and 6s Plus phones are in stores.

correct. like for my location here, if you go and try to reserve a phone through the site today, you will notice certain sizes and colors aren't available anymore.
