Does Navigon (US) announce street names?

I am just getting into looking for a good navigation app. I hear good things about Navigon and remember trying the Lite version when it was around.

I just wanted to know if this app will announce street names or not.

Yes it does! Freeways, highways, streets, everything! It works quite nice too! I have both TomTom and Navigon and I use Navigon like 95% more.

So Navigon would be a good choice. Especially at the reduced pricing right now. A few other questions if I may?

    1. How are the POI's for Navigon? Are they fairly current and can you do a search for POI's?
    2. What does Tom Tom have that Navigon doesn't and vice versa?

Tom Tom has a better way to preview your route. My house built three years ago, is now on Tom Tom maps, but not navigons. I like Tom Tom after the last update.

I think generally TomTom's maps are much more recent. I've heard people argue both ways. But on average I hear Tom Tom is more up to date.

edit: I've also heard that Tom Tom's POI's are much better. At least early on when both were just released that's what was being touted as a reason to buy tom tom

Can any Navigon owner let me know if it's possible to enter coordinates as a destination (using latitude and longitude) rather than a mere address? I've read Navigon manuals for other GPS devices and there does seem to be a way to do this with the software, but I don't know how similar MobileNavigator is to the software used to run the traditional GPS devices.

    Any thoughts appreciated!

What about entering a destination according to where I tap on the map? There must be a way that I could key in a route without knowing the address to it (like say visiting a little known park or a beach.)

Yes, you can also choose a place on the map and set it as your destination.

So is Tom Tom worth the extra $30.00? Who has had more updates and additions to their App? This to me would seem a good piece of info and show who is on top of things.

TomTom has been getting a lot of criticism for their lack of updates. Navigon has actually pushed out 4 updates in the span of a few short months while TomTom has had nil. It's one of the reasons I'm looking into Navigon as a road navigation solution myself.

This is something I plan to write about. But it's merely one company's method versus another. It's called iterative design. Where each version of an app builds on the previous version. Navigon seems to be pushing them out faster, but why is it so wrong that TomTom is taking longer? It's not that it really matters.

What SHOULD matter is which one offers what is best for what YOU want.

Want POI's? I think TomTom has Navigon beat based on user testimonials.

Want more up to date and accurate maps? I think users will also state that _mostly_ TomTom wins this as well.

Which one is better at routing? Navigon MIGHT have it won if it comes down to using Live Traffic information. Which may or may not be available for your area, and you also have to pay extra for it anyway. So without live traffic, which one is more accurate?

They both announce street names now.

Both let you control your music now.

There's a lot to choosing which one is better obviously and one person may favor features from one app over the other. I think in the end TomTom might be looked at in such a way that it seems negative. But it might have something to do with expectations and people seem to have pretty high expectations of TomTom but less so of Navigon. Which benefits Navigon obviously.

I fully suspect that most casual users will be happy with either of them. Only the hardcore users seem to be the ones complaining or saying one is better than the other. I mean, seriously, you've gotta be pretty hardcore to have purchased BOTH. That's over $200 normally priced (with Live Traffic on Navigon).
