My question is this on LTE what else comes through on the watch? is it just calls and texts? or can notifications like twitter/instagram still come through? for me LTE would be ideal when going to the gym or going swimming or even going to the shops or for a walk
All my notifications come through over LTE - you can even reply to message notifications - have done this many times to the Google Hangouts app - so even if there isn’t an Apple Watch app you still get the notification and can reply.

I’m an avid runner and I’ve always been fine with a Garmin, but once the AW3 came out with cellular, I had to have it. Once it’s daylight savings, I am running in the dark by myself every night. One direction goes into the neighboring city which is full of seedy characters. The other direction is dark and somewhat deserted in spots. I feel much safer having the ability to call for help from my watch.

I’ve never run with my phone. I don’t like running with anything, I rarely wear headphones and I’d never wear a belt or something that bounces. I need to be free, lol. So to have a GPS Watch, phone, and iPod (if I want music) all in one was a no brainer for me.

Nobody "needs" LTW. Or an Apple Watch at all, or to be connected at all times.

We survived for many years (believe it or not) before cell phones existed.

The problem is that the world has changed dramatically. If a spouse, significant other, or certain other friends / family can't reach you in what they think is a reasonable amount of time, you're assumed dead.

Joking aside, there are valid reasons to want to be connected (safety, family emergencies, etc..). I upgraded to an LTE version myself and I'll say I absolutely love it.

There are plenty of times where I want to have the ability to be connected without needing my phone for other purposes (web, camera, etc..).

Particularly at work, my phone now stays in my office all day while I'm in meetings, etc.

At home, the phone stays inside even when I'm not (cutting lawn, working around house, sitting on the deck, etc..).

The phone stays home a large portion of the time for quick trips to the store, etc..

Personally, the LTE is well worth the cost of admission and I find it liberating.

If you plan to keep your phone within arms reach at all times regardless, probably far less of a use case.

One might need LTE, and another one might not. You need to look at your life to make that determination.

For me it was a no-brainer. LTE was necessary.
Gosh I'm always looking at my life! Not sure a watch or any device made by anyone will help :)

Scenario 1:
You go to the pool, phone stays outside of pool. You start a swim working on your watch, during workout you receive call, you answer call and take care of said business. Resume workout.

Scenario 2:

Going on jogs with a phone can sometimes be a hassle. Leave phone at home, go on your regular job. Stream Apple Music using Bluetooth headphones. Receive some texts, reply’s to said texts. Take an important phone call.

Also, most carriers in the US are providing 3 months free of service. If you find you don’t use it much, cancel the service. At least you’ll have a ceramic back on your watch.

So you stop a swim workout right in the middle of the pool and take a phone call? LOL! You have got to be kidding me!

So if I (pretty much) always have my phone with me, do I really need LTE on my watch?

I’m a gadget slut and when I buy into something tend to want the top tier variant, but in this case I’m wondering what unique use cases the LTE connectivity brings.

Discuss.

I thank you

In my situation I would not need the LTE model. When I do workouts I listen to Podcasts which cant be streamed with Apple watch (yet).

I struggled with which one to buy. I finally decided on the LTE. I already pay the extra $10 a month for a Gear S2 I bought a couple years back that I no longer use, and the contract just ran out... so it's a wash on that point.

But reading through these responses, I'm really glad I made the decision I did. Ceramic back, extra storage, more freedom (when and if needed), etc.

I'm excited. My watch won't ship until the 25th or after, so I'm twiddling my thumbs and tapping my foot until then. :p

Yes, as it happens I am in 8th grade, yet I don’t understand how I take an instruction to do something ‘already’.

It’s a forum about Apple watches, not a Trump rally.

You completely missed his point. He was saying that if you were older than 8th grade, you should 'already' be more mature and not care what other people think of you.

OMG! The red dot looks horrible 'to other people looking at your watch' is generally something teenagers would say. Once you become an adult, the thought process behind something looking horrible 'to other people' is something that doesn't even cross someone's mind. Adults do things that make themselves happy, not to impress others.

Someday when you're no longer a teenager, you'll look back at these posts and your mind will be blown.

It's Trump supporters who have jobs to afford an Apple Watch.

Need? I’d say no. Based on the scenario provided.
Want? More than likely.

I went for the LTE version for the same reason. Want the top tier version. I haven’t activated the LTE, but if I ever decide later, I won’t have to re purchase the AW3. Plus I used some discounts/rewards so it was like I paid for a non LTE AW3.

Pretty much this. I don't have a crystal ball, but I plan to keep the watch a couple of years and I want the flexibility to turn LTE on in the future, depending on features and carrier charges. The ceramic back and extra storage are pluses as well. I am also guessing that the LTE version will have both quicker resale times and resale values that are higher as a % of original cost than the WiFi/GPS only version. I could be totally wrong about all of this.

Yeah, but that is pretty dorky, no?

Face facts, mate. Wearing an Apple Watch is over-the-top evidence that you're extremely dorky. LTE has nothing to do with that.

LTE isn't really needed but it's saved my butt and few times since I've had it, with my iPhone 7 Plus battery acting up since the update.

Something to think about: Why do you always have your phone with you? In some of those situations, if you had the ability to be reached via your watch would you still take your phone? Going out for a walk, running down to the store, grabbing lunch with a friend, etc. I suspect many will find this presents something of a paradigm shift around how tied they remain to their phone in various circumstances through the day.

This is why I’m keen to get an AW3. I’d like to be freed from the tyranny of “having” to carry my iPhone with me all the time. If only it had a proper podcast app.

Chill baby chill.

Now I understand the comment, although it’s an awful application of English. Even an 8th grader knows that.

Still think texting from your watch when in a swimming pool is dorky, but as said by someone else, so is having an Apple Watch.

Anyway, let’s not get all wound up.

Indeed. Although both WatchCast and WatchPlayer exist, they both also currently suck in terms of transferring podcasts. Slow (not their fault), cumbersome, and unreliable.

Your response got me thinking "well, if music, why not podcasts?" which got me thinking about what seems to me like an anomaly: LTE has 2x local storage. Seems upside down?
