Does OS X Mail support push for gmail in background?

Hi,

I seem to be receiving email notifications only when the Mail app is running.

Does OS X Mail support push for gmail notifications when the Mail application is not opened?
 
Nope. You have to have the Mail app running.

There is no background process for mail like on iOS.
 
Nope

You can hide or minimize Mail when you're not using it and it will still check email, which is essentially what iOS does, albeit more elegantly.
