I’m going to upgrade the ram on my 2019 iMac today and I was wondering whether replacing the RAM requires putting iMac face down as shown in many videos on YouTube? I much rather keep it on its stand as the IMac normally sits and not put it screen down applying pressure to the screen.

I agree. My 2019 iMac arrives tomorrow and I also plan on installing RAM on it's stand. I worry about scratches with face down.

And remember precaution to avoid static electricity

What Bondavi said times 20 and you will be just fine.

Unbox, leave the screen film on. Place towel or blanket on table. Upgrade RAM, done.

You have more leverage that way and less risk of plopping your iMac down whilst pushing down the modules and securing the tray.

Having replaced the hard drives in literally hundreds of iMacs, there is no risk to laying one down on the screen provided you don’t have a screwdriver in the way. The outer ring of the case takes all the pressure, not the screen panel.

Just don’t plop the thing down and it’s fine.

What if I am planning to get additional RAM not now but later after some use of the iMac?

I received my new iMac two days ago. Last week I ordered 64 GB of RAM to replace the 8 GB that came with it.

Before adding the new RAM, I turned the iMac on to make sure it was working. Then I turned it off, unplugged it, opened the RAM door, and replaced the RAM without laying it on its screen. However, the back of my iMac faces the opening into the room it's in, so the back is easily accessible. I pushed the bottom of the iMac screen away from its base to give me the most room to access the RAM door. I think laying the iMac on its screen is the preferred way since it makes the RAM door easier to access, but I had no trouble doing it the way I did.

I have put memory in 100's of iMacs and I never lay them down to do so. Hold the front bottom center while inserting the chips. I have noticed that the 2017 versions are a little more sensitive to it being seated properly. Usually I leave the cover off until I know it boots and acknowledges the upgrade.

Yeah just brush off a table and leave the foam on it (I pulled away the area on the back) and set it face down to install it. Pretty sure that's how it's supposed to be done. The iMac has a glass display so it's pretty sturdy unlike most flimsy displays that you can't even look sideways without scratching. It's not a big deal. Boot it up first time and you'll have loads of RAM. Takes two minutes.

should you boot up the computer before placing the RAM ... just to make sure it's starting up properly?

I just upgraded the RAM in my 27 Inch 2019 iMac, Putting the screen face down was not an issue and was straight forward. iMac recognized the Ram and shows total RAM of 24GB now. Purchased 2 x 8gb sticks for a total of 117$ from OWC

You actually have the ideal surface in your home for inserting the RAM. Place the iMac face down on your bed. No opportunity to scratch the screen and a large work surface. I've used this method for several years now - very easy.

I didn’t. They don’t know whether or not you opened the RAM door, and even so it’s completely allowed with instructions on their site. If it doesn’t boot, then try taking the RAM back out. You see, it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t boot at your first boot or at your second boot. 99% of the time it’s gonna boot so just put the RAM in first and you’ll save time and don’t have to worry about scratching anything. A tech at the factory has already booted it anyway and tested everything so it’s not even really the first boot.

I replaced it on the stand.
