Does restore & backup save your text messages?

My iPhone 6 plus has been non responsive to the touch screen. I'm thinking I'd like to restore the phone to factory and start fresh. I use iCloud for everything however the only thing I really don't want to lose is my text messages which I use for work and scheduling.

1) Does a backup & restore save my data to be put back on the iPhone

OR

2) Even better is there a way to manually save all of my text messages and manually get them back on the phone after I do a fresh clean install?

I would prefer a clean install instead of a backup but I'll manage with either.

I assume a backup would restore everything if it was encrypted.

If you do an encrypted backup, your messages will be restored 100% along with everything else including health data.

Actually .. Most people do store the thing in keychain; http://mrfloris.com/article/2033/how-to-restore-iphone-backup-password/ so you can get it back then.

Doesn't matter. The backup is the same, but when encrypted, includes a few more things.
