Speaking of noise and darkness. I am in a hotel room in China. Room is very dark but the Chinese are so noisy that doors slam in middle of night and they stand in hallway talking as if they were at a concert talking to their friends with zero consideration for others in their rooms trying to sleep. Due to the number of people here in China many often care less about those around them and care only about themselves so they speak freely and loudly regardless of the time of day and make as much noise at night as they do during the daytime. I was taught as a kid to be quiet at night in respect of others who may be sleeping or resting. In Hong Kong, Taiwan and China this is not the case. A trip over to Japan and the difference is day and night..

Yes, in my experiences as well, the differences in public space and consideration of others--in general--in China and Japan is quite stark.
 
yes. I generally want / need for a good nights sleep as dark as possible and more importantly, absolute silence.

Even the sound of the air moving in the vents can keep me up for hours.
