    Question:

Which screen res provides greater GPU performance(games run like minecraft that are windowed)

    2880x1800
    1440x900(HiDPi)

other question: Does scaling take up GPU? and if, does it make a difference in FPS?

At 1440x900 HiDPI there shouldn't be too much of a scaling hit. Apps that aren't retina-aware are going to be pixel doubled which shouldn't take much GPU performance. You can always test it out yourself, Minecraft has an FPS counter built in (F3).

Using the 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 HiDPI modes should cause more of a performance hit because the GPU has to do high quality scaling of the whole screen image.
