Weird. I get mixed results. Sometimes it works....
Saw this thread and thought I would find out. I started by covering my iPhone far away were it almost certainly could not hear. The :apple:Watch app identified the track. Before I posted the result I took iPhone down stairs into my soundproof HT so I could make a definitive test. This time all I get is the following screen. Decided to give up.

Exactly...very strange. So, my theory is that iPhone has to be close (within same room) to accept data from Watch? I am almost 99% sure that it uses Apple Watch mic...but what it does with the data is unclear to me. Does it process within Watch or does it send to iPhone for processing and identification? I bet the latter.

Good find. I guess that answers it.

They are wrong though. The mic can be used as of watchOS 2.0. Lots of good apps use the mic for recording, etc.



Oh well, mystery solved for now.
