Will the 17" be revised?

no, the 17" isn't going anywhere. There is a healthy market for it, and Apple is into making money.

I would say there is some chance of it becoming an 18" laptop instead. Most of those who are interested in the 17" wouldn't be bothered by the extra inch, and it could allow them to offer an even better resolution. I don't expect it, but would note that the possibility exists.

17" rules!! I don't see why they would get rid of it! What they should do is edge to edge screen so a 17" would be the size of a old 15"!

Even Steve Jobs was known to use a 17" PowerBook to build his keynotes. I doubt they'd kill it...in fact it might be the only model to still sport an optical drive/expresscard slot in the next revision/redesign. i.e. the true pro laptop left standing.

I repeatedly get comments about how huge the product is.

So do I , but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

I mean, the 27" ACD is several times the resolution than the 11" MBA, but there are things that just can't be done on such a small screen. Likewise, you can't take the 27" into cramped bathrooms and crawl spaces. Doesn't make the other less/more adequate.

Lol. Why are you taking your computer to the bathroom?

I can't say that I would like this. The black bezel really makes the colors pop, and it's a nice design touch to go with the keyboard.

I'd rather have a huge battery than an optical drive... I bet it could get about 15 hours. I wouldn't have to charge it everyday!

If Apple wanted to save the 13" MBP they could always push the screen out a bit (Making the bezel a bit smaller) and make the screen 14" while maintaining the 13" form factor.

Why would apple NOT update the 17" is the question. I can see from your poll that people are overwhelmingly responding with yes - how surprising!

Voted the wrong way. Meant to say yes.

Can't seem to change the vote.

17" = way for people to work on 1080p videos in the field.

If Apple redesigns the MBP chassis and the screen ratio goes to 16:9, then it's possible that the 17" would become 16.4", which is a standard size. The width of the present 16:10 17" screen is 14.45", and the width of a 16:9 16.4" screen is 14.27", so there isn't much difference. The screen height would be smaller, and the resolution might be 1920 x 1080, or 2560 x 1440 for really hi-res for a 1:1 relationship to the 27" iMac and ACD.

If Apple does that, unless there are REALLY compelling features, I'll just buy a 2011 machine. I think that the screen size on the 17" is absolutely perfect. If would buy the 18" one, but would probably still prefer the 17" computer. I don't watch enough movies to become a 16:9 fan.

TO 17" MBP owners: How much do you use the computer on your lap?

No less than my old 15" MBP.
ie, whenever I want to use my computer, and a desk is inconvenient or nonexistent.

I even use it on the train sometimes. It is not noticeably bigger or heavier than the 15". In fact, I like the slight extra size. It fits across my knees marginally better.

The air is only going to get more powerful, and when Apple remove the OD from their MBPs...

For crying out loud. How delusional are people? Even when confronted with what appears to be hard evidence to the contrary, people are still living in this Katy Perry world of no optical drives just because THEY don't want one.

Are people not reading that Lion is being released on a DVD? Meaning, if people plan to be installing it, it's a STRONG potential that the optical isn't going anywhere? Apple is not going to mandate millions of MacBook users to buy a $100 Superdrive just to (re)install the base OS. It ain't happening.

If you don't want the optical, go for the Air. Leave the Pro alone.

Now that Apple has decided we are stupid and no longer need discrete graphics there's room for it to stay.
.

The NVIDIA GeForce 320M is not a discrete card, it was just a nVidia integrated solution.

Apple didn't make the call to get ride of it, Intel decided they were not allowing any integrated solutions outside of their own with Core iX chips, so Apple stayed with the older Core 2 Duo chips to get a better GPU on board, but with Core 2 Duo aging more and more, Apple had to bite the bullet and join the rest of the market with Core iX throughout their line up.

I wondered that as well.

It will stay. And as for the size I have had people say they thought it was a 15 inch. It is easily the slimmest and sleekest 17 inch I have ever come across.

If Jobs is to be believed, the Post PC era is here.

Who knows what the future is for Apples laptops.

One thing appears obvious, they will be dumbed down for the computer illiterate.

Remember Apples current motto, "Anything For Profit".
