Another suggestion to the OP

If you have access to another HDD or a Firewire HDD, just load up a fresh install of OS X and bring it in.

[whole lot of ranting]

Let me put this simply. Any troubleshooting process always goes as follows:

1) Test user.
2) Test software.
3) Test hardware.

Taking a machine into the shop takes care of #1, but if they can't get past #2 they'll never reach #3. No reputable repair shop will ever trust a customer's self-diagnosis and jump straight to #3.

I'm out. Best of luck to the OP, everyone have fun with the righteous indignation, I'm off to do grown-up things.

Wait, I don't get it. Why buy a Mac and single boot Linux? I've used OpenSuse, Ubuntu (including gnome, KDE and XfCE environments), Xandros, Mandriva and PC Linux, and they don't use up too much hard drive space. How new is the Mac? Seriously, why not just dual boot and use the Mac partition to store all of your data? Then you can boot from OS X and bring it in. Plus, you'll know for sure that this is a hardware problem.

Way to have two pages of bickering over this.

Well, it's really up to the owner. I've single-booted WinXP on my MacBook at some point in my life. If your OS of choice covers all your needs, why wouldn't you remove OS X?

Although I can agree to an extent it can be useful, at least for firmware upgrades and cases like this one, if not for anything else. But at the moment, the OP seems to be faced with a problem and us preaching about what he should have done doesn't help...

just an update they don't at all I finally took it in...they were actually VERY nice about it...makes me rethink my whole "next time I won't buy apple hardware" stance.
