I have been hearing from different sources that OS X operates its own maintenance (disk defragment etc.?) during the night at 3AM or something. Since I don't usually stay up late until 3AM, I normally put my MBP to sleep at around midnight.

The question is, will this prevent my system from undergoing the automatic maintenance scripts?

My guess is that it does not wake up to perform these tasks... so no, it doesn't do them when it's asleep.
