In a van down by the river
With the new SE, finding a screen protector that actually fit was nigh to impossible. It looks like that won’t be a problem with the new mini 12. Is that accurate? I would like to have screen protector without the halo effect and covers the entire screen.

I know it’s all a personal preference but I’m just curious why the screen protector is used today. The screens were so much more durable than they were 10 years ago but I haven’t felt any inclination to use one since my iPhone 4S. They may get micro scratches over time but the glass is so much more comfortable to use than a rubbery coating.

If you use tempered glass, the screen feels the same.
Also, as someone who's owned every iPhone since the original, I've found that as the glass gets "stronger", it becomes much more susceptible to scratches. My iPhone 8 was scratched within a week, a problem I've never had with other phones. I started using screen protectors after that.

Gotcha, thanks. I’ve never really scratched or cracked a phone so haven’t felt a need for it. Although I do wish there was an easy replacement for the oleophobic coating as it seems to wear down after a while and eventually the smudges and fingerprints become really annoying, or here in Arizona the salty sweat really leads to bad smudges

They make glass screen protectors that feel like the screen.

Per Apple's website, "The iPhone 12 mini display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.42 inches diagonally (actual viewable area is less)."

But everything else I've been seeing mentions flat glass corner-to-corner, so I'm honestly confused now

I think they're just talking about the display part of the screen itself being rounded at the corners. In the horizontal plane. From everything I can see, all the phones have perfectly flat screens (which I agree with OP, is very nice).
