I'm not yet convinced that Android will rival the iPhone, but I hope it will. As others have said, it will only spur Apple to try even harder.

But even if it DOES do well, I don't think it will hurt iPhone sales. The smart-phone market is growing very fast and it's doing by sucking up "regular" cell phone customers.

This means Apple's sales can go WAY up in 2009 and Android's sales can go WAY up in 2009 and there's no problem there.

So we'll see what happens, but it will several years before Android and the iPhone actually have to compete head-to-head. For the time being they can both make a killing without stepping on each other's toes.

Well, from what I understand, the Android OS is a replacement for other mobile OS's - it'll make other phones better than they are now. But it won't replace the iPhone for one specific reason: there is no cell phone standard, even for Android. Android didn't require anything at all from the hardware it runs on, so games can't be written to require hardware acceleration, apps can't be written to require a nice high-res screen, etc. If all you care about is the phone interface and not the Apps you buy for it, then the Google Phone might be something to consider, but I'd bet any Android apps will end up being standard cell-phone quality rather than almost computer quality like we get on the iPhone. So if you (like me) like the iPhone for its apps, the Google Phone is definitely not the way to go.

iPhone and google phone are both awesome phones.

The only question is do you prefer closed or open source? Are you ok with apple having a kill switch that can kill any app on your phone they deem unacceptable? Or will its good looks be enough for you?

it's all up to you. While google phone won't be as good looking. I think their phone will be quality.

If anything, Android is competing with Windows Mobile. They're both targeting mobile phone makers who don't want to make their own OS. This will probably be more successful than Linux because Windows mobile isn't quite as entrenched but it still doesn't say a lot for it.

And Mr. FUD, can you please rethink your argument and actually talk facts instead of hyped up fear mongering?

Open vs Closed: This relates to the iPhone how?

Kill switch: You'd prefer Apple had no ability to kill an app that somehow got through their vetting process but was malicious? Double standard much? And FYI: they've yet to use this feature.

UI usability: So having a bad UI is now a feature?

You know someone doesn't have an argument when they only sling mud. Stop with the FUD please.

AndroidOS may not be as polished (for now), but it will be close enough. Eventually we'll see all sorts of different types of handsets that use Android and they'll be on all the carriers. So it's just a matter of time before gphone outsells iphone.

I think it will end up like the PC/mac situation we see today.

It's been a few hours since the Android phone announcement and my iphone is still working. Guess we'll all be okay after all.
