Does the iPhone 5 being discontinued mean no more updates?

Yep, you got it right. All future software updates will work with the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S....but not the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 4 is over three years old and is going to get an updated version of the operating system in a week or so. I'm not sure exactly what you're complaining about.
The iPhone 5C is exactly the same phone, just plastic with a little bit bigger battery. No issues.

Our i5's still work; it will still receive updates (not even sure why you thought it wouldn't particularly when the 5c is a 5 with a plastic shell); they'll replace it with an 5 if you are owed a replacement. As an owner of a 5, I don't feel wronged or spat at. I got what I paid for.
Except my iPhone 5 is metal and the 5C is plastic. Part of the big reason I moved from an HTC Touch Pro to the iPhone 5 was to get away from cheap plastic.
Maybe the 5C is newer, but IMO metal is better than plastic.

You have one. Why should it matter If they stopped selling it? It's not like yours is going to vanish or stop getting updates.
Discontinuing a model means nothing to those who already own it. It just means they won't be selling new ones once the current supply is gone. Even the 3Gs is supported up until iOS7.
There is another way to look at it. If you *really* liked your phone to begin with, then the 5 will become special, one of the few on the streets.
But if u just bought it because it was the newest and shiniest at that time then yeah your parents have moved on.

The OP never mentioned an HTC phone. I did. Note that I am not the one that inquired about updates., the OP did.

Are you retarded? Did you not notice that Apple released something other then the iPhone 5C? It's called the iPhone 5S, and it looks nearly identical to the iPhone 5. That's your replacement for the iPhone 5 and it's an improvement on the existing model.
I understand if you don't like the looks of the 5C, but to say that iPhone abandoned the iPhone 5 and act the 5C is the only replacement is just plain stupid.

Take the back and sides off the iPhone 5, slap a plastic back on and you almost have an iPhone 5C. It has a slightly larger battery, but it is almost the same. They just needed to make it different.
