I'm wondering if I should let someone know if an update is out. They're on 5.1 and 5.1.1 was just released. Will their iPhone alert them at some point of the new update or should I let them know of the update?

Yes, I received an alert today.

I never have. But I frequent these forums often enough to probably notice the updates before it has time to alert me I guess.

i haven't seen an alert, but then again being on MR and reading other blogs keeps me in the loop too.

I wouldn't know as I still have my 5.1 update badge showing lol.

Just checked and it's now an update icon for 5.1.1, nope won't be touching.

I am still using my 5.1, I think I need to make the updating too

The phone should display an alert when a new version of iOS is available. That being said, the keyword there is "should". It took my phone three weeks after the last update came out to inform me a new one was ready for download. Not that I care because I have no intention of updating, but still. It still took quite a while.

You might be better off telling the person.

Hmm. Im on 5.1 and i dont have the notification on my settings. Probably because i didn't tap on the Software update. Regardless, I won't be updating mine to 5.1.1 anyways.

I just got an alert when I unlocked my phone, letting me know that 5.1.1 is available for download.

When they hook up to iTunes they will also be reminded of the software update.

5.1.1 is only minor bug fixes.

both my iphone 4s and ipad 2 3g never alerted me to the update i only found out via the forums.

And some mobile safari security fixes. Important ones. URL spoofing, fixing a cross site scripting vulnerability and a remote code execution bug.

iTunes will alert you, and you'll get a pop-up on the phone that will alert you, and you get a badge on settings saying that there is an update available. All of it takes a while sometimes two or three days after the update is available.

I have never got an alert because I usually d/l it once I see a new software update is available via looking at my Tweets. On my mom's iPad, she has gotten notified because she never updates it, so when I'm over, I'll usually do it for her.

Don't want to lose my jailbreak.

Noticed ur sig. I thought people did that so when they asked for advice they didnt have to keep reminding people their specs. They could just say problem with iMac and all the other info would be there.

I've got the notification badge on the settings app, ie the (1) in a red blob. But I'm jailbroken so I won't be touching it
