does the late 2008 macbook pro have GPU problems?

If it has nvidia graphics, then the answer is yes. That applies to both the 15" and 17" models of that year.

I bought the Early 2008 MacBook Pro 17 and we also had 2007 15s. One of them had two or three replacements (it took Apple a while to figure out what the problem was and fix it). The other two had one GPU replacement each. I'd guess that the replacements were in 2009 so it would have affected the late 2008s as well. No GPU problems after the last replacements.
