Has anyone tried using the MagSafe charger with an Apple 12watt wall adaptor?

OR

Would those of you who have a MagSafe charger and also have a 12watt adaptor, be kind enough to see if it will charge your phone overnight?

Also, how hot does the Phone and MagSafe puck get when used with the 12watt adaptor?

The reason I ask, is that my 12 mini does not reliably work with third-party wireless chargers, so I am considering the MagSafe. However I am concerned about the phone heating up too much since where I live the ambient room temp can sometimes reach 95˚F (35˚C). A 12watt adaptor should heat up the phone/MagSafe far less than a 20watt adaptor I think.

I would appreciate any insights on this. Thanks.

I wish I could test it for you, but I believe that the magsafe will only output power if it detects a block with USB PD. So any regular won't work. A lower wattage usb c brick might work and lower the charge rate. Even the 18 watt throttles the charger a lot.

Thanks. I think you may be right; but I hope someone else here can confirm whether the MagSafe works with the Apple 12w charger.

Hi firoze,

MagSafe Charger requires USB-C connector. Your 12W (like my 10W Apple Adapter) is USB-A, and not supported.

Please read Apple's Support Document for MagSafe Charger.

The best results (less heat, fast charge) I've had with my 12mini, have been (perhaps paradoxically) with a 60W GaN PD 3.0 Power Adapter. (NekTeck)

The mini and puck heat up much more and more quickly with the recommended 20W, throttling at around 62-64%. Similar results with 30W GaN PD 3.0 brick.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Best, KM

Hello @KayEm6419 , thank you for your helpful message. I had read the Apple Support document. There it says "The MagSafe Charger will also function with power adapters that provide a minimum 12W (5V/2.4A) of power, but this will result in slower charging". I was planning to use a USB-A to USB-C extension cable to use it with the Apple 12w adaptor.

But since you recommend the NekTek 60w adaptor, I will consider that. Are you using it with cable to charge the 12 mini, or with the MagSafe?

Hi!

Yes, that confounding 12W statement is right there in the document. I know of no 12W USB-C charger. I've searched pretty thoroughly! I suspect that if your extension cable setup worked you would get a trickle charge at best.

The 60W Nekteck Adapter works really well with the MagSafe Charger! It was to this use I was speaking, but yes it works well wired too. I like to vary adapters and wattages, so I also mix in the 10W Apple (w/an Anker USB lightning cable) and a 20W GaN PD 3.0 Adapter from PowerArc/ Spigen. This last is also compatible with MagSafe, but it does heat up more.

If I had to choose just one to use or recommend it would be the Nekteck. (Sure wish it came in white!) Second would be the Spigen/ PowerArc.

@KayEm6419 Yes that 12W statement is indeed confusing!

So with the Nekteck + MagSafe, are you charging the 12 mini with a case, or without? And how warm does it get - just slightly warm, or moderately warm?

I MagSafe Charge without case. (It seems to me a case would retain heat, plus I have no desire to mark/damage my cases with the MagSafe ring.)

Subjective call on the heat level! Comfortably warm? Cools quickly. Brick doesn't heat at all itself, nor did the charging tester when used. I am pleasantly surprised by how not hot the setup is.

[Edit to add: i have no financial interest in any of these accessories]

Many thanks, this is most helpful!
