why? when you travel you need a bag...so why not a macbook for real work or something

I meant the iPad Air 2. I have a rMBP 15. However, I would never get rid of my Air 2 for it. Why? I love to lay in bed with the iPad and hold it above me. Cant do that on a laptop. I also much prefer to read magazines and books on an iPad instead of my MBP.

so 2 things are more important than other infinit things that you can with a macbook....so you are one of those who using ipad in bed and toilet

He already has a more capable rMBP, think of the iPad as a companion device. I wouldn't mind having an iPad Pro to pair with my rMBP either, it just won't replace it.

What do take with you when travel? Do you ever just take the iPad?

No way Id ever replace my Air 2 with any laptop, Im sure many feel the same way.

No way I'd ever replace my rMBP with any tablet.

I agree with both of you. I wouldn't replace either with the other. I take both every day. My concession to portability was to carry an rMini instead of the Air, and I will probably replace the rMBP with the rMB for daily computer carry.

I use my rMini for very few things. Mainly for reading documents, casual web browsing, etc. I used to use my iPad a lot more, taking advantage of content creation apps. But I really just prefer OS X for those things.

I'm thinking I'd totally be fine using my smartphones for those tasks, and the rMB for all my other stuff. Tablets just don't hold much value for me anymore. It's more for convenience than anything else.

I will buck the trend here, I think that there is a significant, albeit a small group, that will use the MacBook instead of a tablet. I made the decision ~ 18 months ago to use my iPad with a keyboard instead of a laptop. I have noticed that a number of friends and acquaintances have done the same. Most of them are C-level or own their own business. I also see less "big" laptops in the private lounges at the airports. I think that the MacBook will replace the iPad for many who use it as their sole mobile device.

More cannibalization of the iPad product line...

It is one thing investors on Wall Street are always worried about (declining iPad sales). Hopefully the sale of the new rMB will make up for it.

(Thanks for your comments)

I just remembered that the iPad works great as a second monitor for the Mac. Could be another reason for people to hold onto their iPads.

I don't believe any size MacBook would make any size iPad obsolete. Our local Verizon store uses iPads when initially dealing with customers, it's easier than carrying around a MacBook when there are no tables or desks available.

No

I need a full functioning OS X to run programming apps (some which are windows only) while on the go. An iPad will never be able to replace a macbook for my daily use. In fact, my iPad Air is really unused as the iPad Mini 3 has become my bedside reading tablet and the MacBook is my daily computer.

Plus, once you add one of those stupid keyboard cases to your iPad, its way bigger and clunkier than a MB Air or the new 12" MB.

I would never buy a larger iPad.

Even for travel, I want a MB to offload photos from my DSLR to an external HD and organize them in Lightroom at the end of each day. An iPad can't do that.
