Hello guys. Wondering if it does, because I use it for running and it would be cool.

Or is AOD really limited to time + display some health numbers? Can you even put photos as the main thing on an AOD screen? THANKS!

Quick answer without pictures: when you run using the NRC app and with the AOD enabled you see only the time on a black screen.
If you raise your wrist you will see the NRC screen with the distance ran and other few info

Oh ok Forgive my ignorance, so basically AOD is just showing time? Not third party apps can take advantage of it? Or even your own background photos(screensavers)?

Thanks guys. I guess I will just get the SE then if I have to still lift my wrist to see specific apps.

NRC is one of the worst running app.
It’s better to use apple built in app and have AOD or another app like workoutdoors or intervals pro for more specific needs
NRC has no specific feature and a lot of limitations...

I use NRC most of it for 4 reasons:
  1. the social aspects: I compete with and run along with some friends
  2. It's free
  3. History: I started running about 15 years ago, and from the start, there was Nike plus (with the pebble on my sole), I have a long history of runs, records and memories stored there (I'm currently purple)
  4. The guided runs and training plans, I kind of enjoy them.
They might be silly reasons, but they're reasons nonetheless.

Social aspect : it's far away from Strava or other platforms
Free : most apps with limited functions like NRC are free
History : the main problem, NRC is the only app that locks you in their system. They have removed all export options. The main reason to avoid this app
Guided runs : it's so basic that I don't see what it brings ...

We can add the bugs, the poor analysis features ...

One interesting point, the UI of the watch app is quite nice.

With NRC, you HAVE TO use Nike social features (with very few people you know)
Otherwise, you use the watch app you want for running (Apple, Workoutdoors, iSmoothrun ...) and the social network you want for sharing (Strava, Training Peaks...)
The free version of Strave is miles better than NRC for sharing, analysis ...
You are not locked in Nike world

And speaking of the devil, look what I've just found while throwing out an ancient pair of running shoes...

Not trying to sway anyone one way or the other. I like the bands on the Nike watches way better than the standard Apple Watch Bands, but I like the Workouts app over NRC. In the end, I had been a long time Nike + users (since 2006) and had all of my running history in NRC, but a few years ago they removed a ton of features and also updated the app to one that wouldn’t run on my SEries 2.

At that point, I converted to Apple Workouts App, but since my entire history was still in NRC, with no way to extract it, I use the RunGap tool ($8/year) to sync all of my runs to Garmin & from there to NRC, so I get the (in my opinion) better app, but still get all of my data into NRC.

With Rungap, you can probably export your NRC workout to another platform. Then you are free !

I am loving all the points of view here. I am a longtime Apple Watch runner and I have mainly used the built in app.I had to have surgery and so I am out of the game until January, but am currently trying to decide what to go with.
WorkOutDoors is the best most flexible and will basically turn your watch into a Garmin or Polar. This is going to sound super nit picky, but I just don't care for the UI.
I love the UI on the Nike Run Club app, but it does not have the features.
I love the simplicity of the Workout App that comes with the watch and I just got a Nike 6 (as someone mentioned above, because of the bands) and so the always on is now another thing to consider.

I thought about it but I’m at the black level in the Nike app and would like to hit volt. A couple thousand miles to go still but since it’s only $8/year it seems worth it to me.

Good posts above.

FYI - the Apple Workout app does function with AOD - so you can see the stats during a run without having to wake the watch. (I hope Apple expands this to third party apps eventually; though Workout does what I need)

NRC was nice for a while, but when they ditched their website interface and started closing the doors on letting folks export data, I dropped them and haven't looked back. I'd already been syncing my data out of the Nike+ platform because I didn't trust them, eliminating the website interface sealed the deal. I use PodRunner music mix podcasts for much of my running music, plus various other podcasts on slow/easy days.

Yes, the Nike+ bands are nice. Fortunately they work just fine with the non-Nike+ watches too (no SS Nike models)

RunGap is great. Well worth the $$. If you don't currently export your activity data to alternate platforms, just remember there's a bunch of folks who got screwed in the Apple iOS14 workout data debacle. Avoid losing years of data or "special event" runs by not keeping all your eggs in one basket.

Was in same boat. Used run gap and was able to transfer ALL of my runs to Strava (huge win).

Side note you can't use Siri to start an outdoor or indoor run. If you have NRC installed it would default to the NRC start screen. On a nike watch with NRC uninstalled it will default you to the workout app. Normally (on regular AW) it would start the run. This is a nike AW specific bug. For example if you don't have NRC installed and tell Siri to "start an outdoor run" or "start a 5 mile indoor run" it won't auto start the run. this is only with the running feature. Everything else works fine.

Not sure if you care about details that much but it mattered to me (start a lot of workouts using Siri) and apple has no answer or fix for this.

It maps the route into NRC app, but on in Apple Health, that's why you are locked into Nike ecosystem.
It's the only running app I know which such limitation

Correct. But you can use RunGap to push it to Strava and other places WITH the map.

Yes, but it's an hack, and Rungap informs that nothing guarantees it will continue to work.
Nike can close the door without informing users .

Thanks that’s what I meant. I like to view it in the Apple Fitness app.

Seems I remember this has broken a couple times in the past, and while RunGap has been able to get it working again they continue to suggest not relying on it since they can't give any assurances of the interface continuing.
