This issue was "resolved" on my September 2008 macbook whitey by turning off the airport and using the ethernet. A weak solution, but a solution indeed.

audio problem

This problem is still present. I just got a Macbook Pro last week. It's going back.

All this talk of headphone jacks, dead pixes ect is making me paranoid. I'm not going to order online anymore...i'm going into an apple store, buying it and then testing it before I leave.

We got white imac's in school where I study musicproduction. We got like 20 imacs.

I've noticed a high pitched sound (in 2 of the computers, haven't used all) that is constant. It doesn't change in intensity when you turn sound up or down. I'd guess the frequency is around 1500hz (heard it 2 weeks ago, hard to remember). It's the same sound in both.

I can hear it in both my sennheiser hd201 headphones and in the ones I got with my iphone 3g.

The sound isn't there when I listen through an m-box usb-audio interface.

I'm the only one in my class who has complained about this and we are studying music production. So I bet this error is more common then you might think.

This is sad. I'm getting a new macbook pro for musicproduction and it will not feel very good if the all-my-money-macbook-pro got an error which have been there for years (funny apple does ads about vista when they cant fix this error, "bean counter" my #$$). The more I read this forums the more I lose respect to apple. They are overrated if anyone.

Greetings from Sweden. hehe.

Sorry, I don't feel like reading through 10 pages, but has no one mentioned shielded cables? The audio is analog, if theres interference (which there is), you'll hear it.

For me, shielded cables have fixed the problem with my SR MBP.

Has nothing to do with shielding in any of these cases what I know. With the imac's you just switch to an external interface and the problem is gone.

This is happening with my MacBook Pro as well. I just bought it about two weeks ago (older 2.4 model...I'm assuming it's Penryn) I always thought it was just my iPhone headphones, but I used by Bose Tri-Ports and sure enough, same hissing. And I also get the popping noises every once in a while.

Anyways I made an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow, I'm lucky enough to have a few Apple retail stores next to me (Seattle, WA). I'll post what they end up telling me. This is my first Mac, and I love it, but it sure does bug the crap out of me.

Went in, said they would replace it, but they sent all the old model MBP back. They said they could try and fix it, but didn't guarantee it would fix it. Tried with same style MBP at the Genius bar, no hiss or sound at all.

Frustration continues...Think I may have them fix it, and if it doesn't help, just live with it I guess. Today was the last day I could return it, they said they'd extend it a few days, but I spent $1399 for mine (clearance+EDU) so can't get the new Pro, and don't really want the MB. Sad.

I m sorry your going through this issue. I just received a brand new previous generation Macbook Pro last week. I 've noticed during the last few das a Popping/hissing sound coming from my Macbookpro. At first I though it was something random but the sound became more than just random, more like annoying. I though it had to do my sound card, however when I mute the sound on my Macbook Pro I still hear the popping sound. I m not sure what it is, all I know is that a lot of people have been having the same issue. I just made an appointment with the Genius Bar. Hope they can help me out. I really love my Macbook Pro, I use it for audio editing and that popping/clicking doesn't help. Anyways, Good luck everyone.

Late08 MBP owner. I hear a electronic 'pop' or 'hiccup' that is independent of volume or battery/power adapter right before any sound/alerts. Only happens if you don't hear anything for awhile.

I get that same "snap" before audio alerts if there has been no audio for a while

New MBP

that pop is normal, its the audio card switching back on. all my MBs and MBPs have done that.

my new MBP still has some static hiss but none of the r2d2 beeping noises like my previous MBP

EDIT: the beeping noise is still there but much fainter. sigh

At first I thought my new model had the popping issue (only out the headphone jack not the speakers) as it was doing it while online and playing a YouTube vid. I was all set to call Apple tomorrow about the issue as it was intermittent and rather annoying. Then I read a post on here that someone said it might be the computer sleeping the audio when it hasn't been used in awhile to conserve energy. Since I've been playing a CD in iTunes its gone away. I'll have to check tomorrow but this seems to be where the problem was coming from. Frankly I don't really care about miniscule power the audio sleeping saves, anyone know how to turn it off so your sound never sleeps? ...or at least turns on if you play a video online. I don't want to have to run iTunes before listening to audio content w/o headphone beeps when surfing the web.
