i dont see any confirmation that this is fixed in ML. anandtech said its improved in ML but definitely still not smooth. will further iterations of ML fix it more? who knows. i hope so but according to anandtech, he said the hardware was already pushed to the max and theres nothing that can be done about it.

It looks like the scrolling issue is fixed by leveraging the GPU moreso than what the current implementation which relies more on the CPU. The scrolling issue is completely fixed in Mountain Lion according to Apple (you should expect 30+fps performance). I have not seen anything anywhere that says the OSX UI sluggishness (read: toggling Mission Control, resizing windows, other UI animations in OSX, etc) has been addressed, unless Apple wants you to infer that is the case based on the "Smooth Scrolling" feature outline.
 
No. I have not seen significant proof for this. The GPU outputs to a certain resolution, the screen is what outputs to pixels. So pixels are not driven by the GPU but the display, and the display is driven by the GPU settings. So to my mind it only matters to the GPU what settings you put it at. The number of pixels on the other end is of no concern to the GPU, its still outputting the same resolution regardless of pixel density.

Im no engineer but I dont see why one display or another would effect the GPU or CPU.

um its because of the scaling needed to actually do retina display. the scaling needed for this display can't be handled by the hardware, thus why apple had to write custom scaling software to do so. and of course software vs hardware acceleration is way slower.
 
all i saw there was scrolling up and down a page with ONLY text. i don't think thats much of a test.

There are more videos uploaded by that user demonstrating different things, iTunes, different webpages etc, it's in the thread about the slow UI.

huh? so... are u disagreeing or what?

Scaling is going on yes, but I still dont see how that is any different from resolution setting on the GPU.
